Elliswick LTC Newsletter – August 2023

Dear Members,

Welcome to our August Newsletter.  We hope that you all had a great summer.  Most of the summer inter-club matches have now been played and it looks like it’s been another excellent season with most teams either retaining their status or vying for promotion.  We are now looking forward to the autumn/winter matches.

JUNIOR TOURNAMENT – 17TH SEPTEMBER

It is not too late to enter the tournament.  We have now extended the deadline until the 8th September.  We need more girl players to participate in this tournament.  Please do encourage your juniors to enter.

BBQ food and drinks will be available throughout the day so please come along to support our junior members and make it an extra special day.  It will be a one day “round robin” championship.  Timings for the day will be advised in due course to all those who have entered.  With any event we rely on volunteers to make this happen, so if you can assist with scoring a match or two that would be greatly appreciated.  Please email Andree Haxton at [email protected] if you’re able to help on the day.

CLUB NIGHTS

Our Summer club nights (Mens nights on Tuesdays, Ladies nights on Wednesdays and Mixed nights on Thursdays, all starting at 6pm) will continue until the end of September.  The Friday Junior Nights will reconvene after the Summer Holidays on Friday 8th September and will also run until the end of September.

CENTENARY VIDEO FILMING

As part of the celebrations of the Club’s centenary next year, we are going to produce a video highlighting the Club’s history and features. A film crew led by our own Anthony Greenbank will be at the Club on Thursday 14th and Saturday 16th September (weather permitting) to film the grounds and us playing tennis and socialising. With the permission of the parents/guardians we would also like to film the kids’ coaching on the Saturday morning. There will be a drone taking overhead shots. Hopefully this will be fun and not inconvenience anyone.

We also need to loan of a vintage bicycle if anyone has one from the 1940s or earlier. Please let us now if you are able to help.

CLUBHOUSE AND GROUNDS

  1. A builder will be undertaking work to stabilise the roof support post at the corner of the clubhouse, near the entrance. The roof has dropped slightly, so he will fit an acro support, remove the paving slabs and underpin the post (or stabilise it by other means), before making good. The work is likely to be carried out at short notice and may require members to enter the clubhouse using the rear entrance.
  2. Abacus will be visiting the club on Wed 20 and Thu 21 September to service the floodlights. We will close courts 4 & 5 all day (08:00 – 18:00) on Wednesday 20 September, then courts 6 & 7 all day on Thursday 21 September.

Mens Teams

Men’s Herts League season is almost over. It was good to see some new faces competing this year – thanks again to team captains for their hard work in making this possible.

The vets leagues will get underway in the next few months. If anyone would like to be included in the squads for 45+, 55+, 65+, then please let Jem know and he can put you in touch with the respective team captain.

Mixed Teams

Following the conclusion of the Summer Datchworth League we are now entering the Autumn/Winter /Spring competitions and have entered a number of teams into the Autumn Datchworth and the Winter Mixed competitions.  The Autumn Datchworth runs from  early Sept until early November usually on Saturday afternoons and the Winter Mixed from October to April.  Both are two pair teams.  Anyone who played in the previous year’s mixed teams and this year’s Summer Datchworth will be included in the squads for the forthcoming competitions but if you didn’t play in any of these and would like to included please let Tony Ward know via [email protected] and he’ll get you added to the appropriate team squad.

Mixed friendlies we have played all of 5 matches, won 1 and lost the others.   We have used a mix of players in this league, some juniors and some more experienced players.  We are currently mid-table in the league after Redbourne and St. Albans who have much stronger players.

Social Mix-In on Thursday 6pm continues over the summer months with a good range of playing standards all being organised into competitive fours by one of our Coaches

DONATIONS

Clothing

Some of our members (Sally Radcliffe and Angela Perry) are looking for good quality, clean second had men’s t-shirts, shorts, trousers, jumpers, waterproof jackets, trainers, football boots and kit for local asylum seekers in Markyate.  These young guys have fled war torture and political oppression and are in desperate need. Please put donation in the box in the clubhouse.

Used Tennis Rackets

Another member (Noel Nichols) is looking for old tennis rackets to give to HACRO (Helps with the Care and Rehabilitation of Offenders). They would be grateful if you are able to help.  Please drop them off at 16 Elliswick Road.

Kind Regards
