Welcome to our April Newsletter. We have some important news to share with you in this newsletter.
CLUB’S ARTICLES
The amendments to the Club’s Articles were approved unanimously at the General Meeting on Saturday 22 April 2023. The amended Articles have been filed with Companies House and will be available on the Club’s website shortly.
CENTENARY
Elliswick will be 100 years old next year. A Centenary Sub-committee has been formed to plan events and mementos to celebrate the landmark. Please let the sub-committee members (Sally Radcliffe, Jane Bisseker, Jim McGown, Jem Collier-Garrity and David Kendall) have any suggestions you may have. Jim and David will be preparing a history of the club so could you please let them have any photos or memories that you think would be of interest.
ANNUAL TOURNAMENT- FINALS DAY 24th JUNE 2023
Thank you to those who already completed their first-round tournament match. Please can you ensure that you complete your match by the deadline dates, details as follows:
Mens Single – First Round – Saturday 22nd April
Mens Single – Second Round – Saturday 20th May
Ladies Single – Second Round – Saturday 3rd June
Ladies Doubles – Second Round – Saturday 20th May
Mens Doubles – Second Round – Saturday 20th May
Mixed Doubles – Second Round – Saturday 20th May
Failure to complete your match tournament by the deadline will result in one or both players/pairs being withdrawn from the tournament.
If you need a court for your tournament match during the club nights or social mix-ins, please contact Andree Haxton at [email protected], who will try to allocate a court for your match.
If you have any issues, please contact Louise Behan at [email protected] as soon as possible.
Finals Day is Saturday 24th June 2024. Matches will be played both in the morning and in the afternoon. In case of inclement weather on 24th June 2023, finals day will be moved to Sunday 25th June 2023. Players wishing to play in the finals must ensure they are available to play on both days.

Line Judges
We are looking for members who can help with the linesmen/women rota for the 5 matches. Please contact Andree Haxton at [email protected] if you are able to volunteer.
FRONT DOOR CODE
This is to remind you that the code to the clubhouse’s front door is C2016.
DEFIBRILATOR
Please note that a defibrillator is kept in the hallway of the clubhouse. In emergency, please call 999, they will be notified of the location of the nearest defibrillator and, if that happens to be the Club’s, they will be given the code to ELTC’s front door to access it.
BRINGING A GUEST
Guests are allowed during off-peak times. Please make sure that the member introducing a guest to play tennis must enter the name and address of the guest together with his/her own name in the book which is kept on the Club’s premises (in the hallway). At the same time the required visitor’s fee (£3.00 cash) must be paid. No one may be admitted as a guest to play tennis on more than three occasions in any calendar year. The total number of guests permitted per Member per annum shall be four.
SOCIAL TENNIS
Details of our social tennis as follows:
- Ladies morningson Tuesdays from 9am-11:00am, turn up and play
- Social Mix-in from 9am-11:00am on Thursday mornings, 10am – 12pm on Saturdays and Sundays – just turn up and join in
- Ladies Nights on Wednesday evenings – from 6pm. If you wish to join in, please contact Victoria at[email protected] as she arranges fixed fours
- Club Nights(Mix-in) on Thursday evenings from 6pm onwards – The Thursday night format prioritises mixed doubles. This will be organised by one of our Coaches, generally Rupert Tillbrooke, and it will be on a first-come first-served basis. Rupert will ensure that players of like ability are matched together for enjoyable games.
- Mens Nights on Tuesday Nights from 6pm onwards, just turn up and play.
- Junior Nights on Friday Nights (Term time only) until Friday September 29th – Volunteers Needed
4pm to 6pm, for the primary school members. Parents will need to be on side during this time.
6pm to 8pm, for the secondary school members – An adult volunteer needed to supervise
CLUBHOUSE AND GROUNDS
- The faulty floodlight with the broken glass has been repaired and is back to full working order. However, another floodlight has now failed – subject to weather conditions this fault will be investigated w/c 1 May.
- Electrical Contractors Deeks will be on-site on Thursday 11 May to undertake essential remedial work following the recent electrical safety inspections. As a result, the electrical power to the clubhouse will be switched off intermittently during the day.
- The Elliswick committee have approved the purchase and installation of rubber grass matting along the path from the clubhouse to the junior court and practice wall. The matting will be laid in late May or June
- Planning is now under way for the design and installation of a solar PV and battery storage system at Elliswick, to reduce energy costs. Monitoring of energy use with the OWL Intuition system continues, with 6 weeks of data now available.
TEAM TENNIS
Mens Team
2022 Winter vets – Some matches are still being played.
2023 Herts Summer League.
We have entered 5 teams to this competition. Players have been allocated and matches are starting.
2023 Herts National League
One team only has been entered in this league.
2023 Hot Rackets.
We have entered two teams in this format. ELTC 1 (Captained by Paul Hunt) and ELTC 2 (Captained by Dave Pankhurst) and matches are yet to play.
Ladies Team
Hot Rackets/Herts League: Dates for these leagues have now been organized and confirmed. Players have been allocated.
Friendly matches: Lynn Frankling has sent out a number of dates and assigned players to these.
Ladies nights: these are up and running and organized by Victoria using the whatsapp group. If there are any new members wishing to play on ladies night please contact Victoria at [email protected]
Mixed-Team
Winter Mixed competition has now concluded with a good set of results. Four of our six teams finished mid-table and will retain their standings for next season and of the other two, one got promoted and one relegated. This will actually provide a better spread of teams across the divisions. Final standings as per the attached link
Summer Datchworth has commenced on the 17th May and is played every Monday night. We have four teams with Amy Martin is running the 1st team, Neil Craig runs the 2nd team and Stuart Owen runs the 3rd & 4th team. MEMBERSHIP
A big WELCOME to all our new junior members. There are still some junior places available. Our adult waiting list is 150.
We are holding a New Members’ Day for adults on Sunday May 14th, 2-5 pm. Please let us know immediately if you wish to come, and have not yet replied to the invitation. Further details will be sent to all those attending by 10th May.
SOCIALS
April was a busy month for socials. David and Marsha Kendall hosted a successful supper night and Dave Pankhurst organised his biggest Jazz Jam to date packing out the clubhouse with 50 members and guests and raising £90 for the Trussell Trust.

EASTER EGG RAFFLE
The winner for the Charity Easter Egg raffle is Number 71 – Jim McGown. Well done to Jim and thank you to everyone for taking part. The total amount raised was £72.
VOLUNTEER APPEAL.
Harpenden Mencap at 19 Douglas Road Harpenden is a residential care facility for adults with varying degrees of learning and physical disabilities.

They are seeking volunteers to assist as occasional drivers to take residents to and from various local clubs, shopping and family visits. Harpenden Mencap can provide vehicles or you can use your own car.
