Charity – the 5 set challenge

On the 13th November Ben Wood, head coach of Elliswick Lawn Tennis Club is undertaking a novel charity challenge. He is raising money for the Sick Children’s Trust and TOFs Charity that have been an enormous help to his family after his son Jacob was born with Oesophageal Atresia and Tracheosophageal Fistula.

Jacob’s 1st birthday was the inspiration to give back to the charities that have helped his family so thousands of others. When Jacob was born and his condition discovered, he was transferred to a London hospital and had a life saving operation within 24 hours of his birth. The Sick Children Trust provided the family a “home from home” within walking distance from the hospital as they were nearly 2hours away from home and their toddler son. The TOFs charity introduced the family to a network of support as they came to terms with Jacobs condition and still offer continuous support now.

They hope to raise as much money and awareness as possible for both the condition and the charities.

The unique challenge combines the support of the local Harpenden and St Albans tennis clubs and shows the great spirit there is for tennis and the local clubs.

The5setchallenge will involve playing 1set at each of the 5 different clubs around the Harpenden and St Albans area and running in-between the venues. This will total just under 15km in distance and roughly 2.5 hours of tennis. The opponents will be

Elliswick Simon Lowe – Mens first team captain,

Harpenden LTC David Lawlor – Head Coach,

St Albans LTC Martin Taylor – Head Coach,

Townsend LTC Matt Foster – Head Coach,

Batchwood Dan Smith, Head of mini Aces.
